Apple may combine iPhone, iPad and Mac apps for a unified user experience

NEW DELHI: Apple might be planning to go the Microsoft way. The Cupertino-based tech firm is reportedly planning to unify its iOS and Mac apps into one for a consistent user experience. As mentioned by Bloomberg, Apple could be taking first steps towards unified apps as soon as early next year. As part of it, developers will get the flexibility to create just one app that works with a touch screen or mouse and a trackpad, meaning on iPhone, iPad or Mac.

For now, developers have to design two different app versions catering to both iOS and Mac users. Introducing unified apps will be solving two problems together. It won't just make it easy and time saving for developers to create a single app, but will also indirectly result in a revival of the otherwise dead Mac app store.

Steven Troughton-Smith, a noted Apple app developer told Bloomberg that unifying iOS and Mac apps will help both platforms "evolve and grow as one, and not one at the expense of the other." He adds that, "This would be the biggest change to Apple's software platform since iOS was introduced."

This project is named as 'Marzipan' internally and will materialise as a part of the upcoming major app update strategy. The project is planned to take place over multiple years. Since it is said to kick-start early next year, we may hear something on the same lines at the 2018 Apple WWDC conference.

However, people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that that all this is still not concrete and plans may change or cancel in future.

Apple's initiative comes after both Google and Microsoft announced their entry in this segment. Microsoft Store already comes with several universal single apps that are designed to run on small and large screen devices. Google is also slowly moving towards it by making its Android apps available for Chrome OS users.

#Apple rolls out iPad mini with Retina display

Apple rolls out iPad mini with Retina displayApple has quietly rolled out iPad mini with Retina display in major global markets. Though the company did not make an announcement, it is now available for purchase on its official online store.

In line with a previously leaked internal document, Apple's new mini tablet is now available in the US, UK, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and New Zealand. The manufacturer is only selling the Wi-Fi version of the device in China as of now. In Japan, the Wi-Fi variant is listed on Apple's website, while the Wi-Fi + 4G model can be purchased via telecom operator Softbank; however, the Softbank website lists the new iPad mini as 'Coming Soon'.

The new iPad mini with Retina is priced at $399 and has a high resolution Retina display and is powered by the 64-bit A7 processor, same as the top-end iPhone 5S and iPad Air. It has a screen measuring 7.9-inch and runs on iOS 7.

Analysts citing supply chain sources say that Apple is facing acute shortage for the display panel of iPad mini with Retina display. The company is said to be facing low yield of the display from Japanese manufacturer Sharp.

At the unveiling of the new iPad Air and Retina iPad mini in October, Apple said that the smaller tablet would be launched "later in November." This surprised many since the company had always given precise launch dates for its handheld devices in the past.

Leaked Rear Shell for the iPad 5?

A photo allegedly depicting a rear shell for the iPad 5 has been leaked online by Tactus. The same site recently posted case photos also alleging to be from Apple's upcoming tablet which appears to have a design similar to the iPad mini.

We believe the new iPad 5 might contain the rumoured A7X chip and will retain its 9.7 inch screen size, just with much thinner bezels. So far it seems to be everything I was hoping for!
...
Apple are finally supposed to be using IGZO displays with their retina resolution screen, which means a thinner iPad is definitely on the cards. IGZO displays use up to 90% less power than previous generation iPad displays, which means a smaller battery that reduces the overall weight and thickness. So much more portable and convenient!

The post continues to speculate the iPad 5 will be 7.2mm thick, feature a 8MP rear facing camera, and storage options up to 128GB.

Pre-launch Demand for iWatch May Be Stronger Than iPad's

A new ChangeWave survey suggests that pre-launch demand for the iWatch may be stronger than pre-launch demand was for the iPad.

According to the survey, 5% of consumers said they were 'very likely' to purchase an Apple smart watch and another 14% said they were 'somewhat likely' to purchase the device. That's even higher than the company's pre-iPad survey that found 4% very likely and 14% somewhat likely to purchase the unannounced tablet.

"Apple's track record of delivering ultra-convenient, easy to use products with a perceived ‘cool factor’ is driving pre-release demand for the rumored Apple 'iWatch,'" said Andy Golub of 451 Research's ChangeWave service. "While an 'iWatch' doesn't yet exist – and if it ever does it will have to live up to super high expectations – it has the potential to be another huge success for the Cupertino, Calif., manufacturer."

Check out this link to see what an iWatch might look like.

Weev Sentenced to 41 Months for Exposing iPad Owners' Email Addresses

Andrew 'weev' Auernheimer, a security researcher, was sentenced to 41 months in jail today for exposing iPad owners' email addresses via a publicly accessible flaw in AT&T's servers.

These hackers discovered a security hole in the AT&T website which allowed users to retrieve email addresses by inputting SIM card identifiers known as an ICC-ID. The breach exposed a number of high profile political and business figures, but no actual damage occurred beyond the simple exposure of the email addresses. In total, approximately 114,000 email addresses were obtained.

In November, Auernheimer was found guilty of identity fraud and conspiracy to access a computer without authorization. After his 41 months in prison he will be subject to three years of supervised release. He and his co-defendant Daniel Spitler have been ordered to pay $73,000 to AT&T in damages.

The Verge notes that there was a struggle for his tablet just as he was sentenced.

Before his sentencing, Auernheimer held a press conference on the courthouse steps, where he read John Keats' The Fall of Hyperion and told the assembled crowd, "I'm going to jail for doing arithmetic." Just prior to the judge's reading of the sentence, Auernheimer was cuffed by agents in a struggle over his tablet. Under the terms of his pre-sentence parole, Auernheimer was unable to use a computer with a keyboard. Asked for the device, Auernheimer tried to hand it to attorney Tor Ekeland, and was returned to the courtroom five minutes later in shackles.

Auernheimer says he regrets being nice to AT&T and giving them time to patch the flaw, but he "won't nearly be as nice next time."

There has been much controversy over the case because no security mechanisms were bypassed to access the information. It was accessible via a public api.

Even Penguins Can Play Games on the iPad

Penguins at the Aquarium of the Pacific - June Keyes Penguin Exhibit enjoy playing games on the iPad, says Hugh Ryono. The husbandry volunteer recently posted a video of a young penguin playing Game for Cats.

As an enrichment for these youngsters aviculturalist Sara told me about her idea of using an iPad game made for cats as penguin entertainment. Just like cats penguins are very curious and the idea of these birds following a virtual mouse on a screen was just too appealing to me not to try out. Dusting off my old iPad 1 and loading Game for Cats app on it we set up a penguin video arcade in the exhibit last week.

Sure enough when Jeremy and Newsom noticed the iPad in the exhibit they both waddled on over. Jeremy was the first to try it out but Newsom was the one that really got into it. Stalking the virtual mouse intently he tried to pick it up repeatedly with his beak. Newsom especially seemed to like the squeak that the mouse made when he put his beak on the virtual critter. The mouse was self reinforcing for this penguin. Newsom set the penguin high score of 1600 for the game.

Retina iPad Mini Predicted for Q3 or Q4 of This Year

DisplaySearch analyst Paul Semenza believes that Apple could release an iPad mini with a Retina Display in the third or fourth quarter of 2013, reports CNET.

"We're seeing potential in the third quarter of panel production for a higher-resolution iPad Mini," DisplaySearch analyst Paul Semenza told CNET today. "When would the Mini be available? Could be third quarter or fourth quarter," he said.

A Retina Display iPad Mini would have a 2048x1536 resolution display with a pixel density of 324 ppi. LG Display is a strong candidate to make the display but AUO, Japan Display, and even Sharp are possibilities, said Semenza.

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has also predicted a Retina Display later in the year.

Apple Patents iPad Smart Cover With Wireless Inductive Charging

Apple has filed a patent for an iPad Smart Cover that can charge the device using induction.

The patent is entitled 'INTEGRATED INDUCTIVE CHARGING IN PROTECTIVE COVER' and outlines 'accurate and reliable techniques for wirelessly powering a tablet device.'

Here's the detailed description of how it might work:

--
In one embodiment, the portable computing device can take the form of a tablet device such as the iPad. More particularly, the tablet device can have associated with it a protective cover that can be attached and detached repeatedly and easily using magnetic attachment. The protective cover can take the form of a Smart Cover exclusively for use with the iPad line of tablet devices.

In any case, the described embodiments relate specifically to the wireless supply of power to electronic devices using inductive coupling. More particularly, useful power can be supplied directly to a tablet device by way of a protective cover that can be placed in close proximity to a surface of the tablet device. The protective cover can include an inductive power transmitter that can take many forms such as inductive coils. The inductive coils can, in turn, receive power from an external power supply.

In some cases, however, the protective cover can include an internal source of power such as a battery that can be used to store power that can subsequently be passed to the tablet device by way of the inductive power transfer circuit. In the described embodiment, the inductive power transfer circuit can be developed between the inductive power transmitter in the protective cover and an inductive power receiver in the tablet device. The power supplied through the inductive power transfer circuit can be used to power the tablet device and/or to charge the tablet device's internal batteries, if needed.
