Apple Allows Users to Report Unwanted iMessage Spam

A new knowledge base article that appear on Apple's website introduces an iMessage spam reporting tool to let users report unwanted messages to Apple.

To report unwanted iMessage messages to Apple, please send an email with the following details to: imessage.spam@icloud.com

1. Include a screenshot of the message you have received.
2. Include the full email address or phone number you received the unwanted message from.
3. Include the date and time that you received the message.

While iOS 7 will allow users to block certain contacts in Messages, Phone and Facetime applications, users on older iOS versions will not be able to use that feature. Users on iOS 6 can also hide alerts from anyone not in their contacts. However, if someone is getting spammed via iMessage on an older version of iOS then this tool will be helpful.

Watch Steve Jobs Introduce WiFi to the Masses [Video]

Reddit brings to our attention an old video that some of you may not have seen -- Steve Jobs introducing Wi-Fi for the first time to the masses, becoming the first mainstream computer with wireless networking.

Jobs introduced the iBook G3 during a Keynote conference in 1999 and it became first consumer device to carry a Wi-Fi card. Wi-Fi was being introduced to the masses for the first time, and Jobs even demonstrated the wireless capabilities by using a Hula Hoop!

During this historic moment, Jobs claimed 'everyone' would jump on the 802.11 bandwagon in the next few months/years. "We're just going to be there first, and the best," Jobs said.

The video shows Jobs waking an iBook from sleep and browsing the web. The crowd was not aware that Jobs was wirelessly surfing the web until he picks up the iBook and walks around the stage while still opening webpages. He then swings a hula hoop around the iBook to show off wireless networking.

Lucent Technologies collaborated with Apple to create the wireless capability in the iBook G3 as well as the Airport Wireless Base Station that was released at the same time.

The iBook packed 11Mbps 802.11, a PowerPC Processor, 32/64MB of RAM and a $1599 price point.

Viber Hackers Deface App Store Description

Viber hackers have now defaced the App's AppStore description after attacking the App's support page. The attack was initially led by the Syrian Electronic Army who have taken responsibility for this latest attack as well. The description now says "We created this app to spy on you, please download it!"

Viber issued the following statement regarding the matter:
A few days ago a “hacker” was able to gain access to a couple of Viber.com email accounts via a phishing attack. This has since been fixed.

Data they recovered allowed them to deface our support site and also gain access to our iTunes Connect account (App Store) at a level that allowed them to change the description text of our app – which they did a few days ago around the same time as the original defacement. We noticed this within minutes, fixed the metadata and removed this user (in fact, all users but one) from our iTunes Connect account.

Unfortunately, on Saturday this happened again. Upon further investigation we realized this is a security issue in iTunes Connect. It seems that when you remove a user, if the user is logged in, then the user stays logged in. We hope Apple fixes this issue soon, as currently we have no way to permanently disconnect this user from our iTunes Connect. We have reached out to Apple regarding this issue and are waiting on their response.

At this point, we want to reassure users, that this has no impact on the security of the Viber App, Viber System, our databases, user information, etc. It’s merely an unfortunate nuisance.

Apple to Release Updated Apple Store App on Tuesday?

Apple will reportedly release an updated Apple Store app on Tuesday which has been redesigned to match the interface of the iTunes Store, App Store, and iBookstore apps, reports 9to5Mac.

This slight interface change comes for a good reason: one of the main new features of the app is downloadable content. As you can see in the photo of the upcoming app update, the app will promote content from the three Apple content stores. This content normally costs money, but it will be available free for a limited time via this new app.

Apple is looking to boost content sales with the new app and also hardware sales. When a new iOS device is sold, retail store employees will reportedly offer to install the Apple Store app on the newly purchased device. Only 20% of customers are aware the app even exists so this should boost its popularity.

Leaked Photos and Video of New Google Nexus 7 Tablet [Watch]

Leaked photos and video of a new Nexus 7 tablet from Google have surfaced on Android Central. The site notes that this device could be a prototype and not necessarily the final shipping product.

What we're looking at here is labeled as the ME571K_PR1_SKU2, again manufactured by ASUS. It should be one of (at least) two versions of the Nexus 7 successor — we're expecting 16- and 32-gigabyte options, and it's probably safe to assume we'll see Wifi-only versions as well as models with cellular data connections. The specs slapped onto this little lost tablet include the expected 7-inch LCD display and, new this time around, a pair of cameras. There's a 1.2-megapixel shooter from LITEONMOBILE on the front, and 5-megapixel camera by Chicony on the back. The rear camera appears to be situated in the same corner as the 3.5mm headphone jack.

The listed specifications indicate a Qualcomm's APQ8064 motherboard with a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor. Also, 4GB of RAM is possible; however 2GB would seem more likely. The tablet is charged via microUSB. Finally, the tablet features dual speakers positioned on the rear of the device.

Google is expected to unveil the device at its event on July 24 in San Francisco.

Apple Testing Offline Voice Dictation for iOS?

Apple is reportedly testing an offline version of voice dictation for iOS, similar to what many Android phones have on the market today.

According to code fragments discovered in iOS 7 beta builds (but now iOS 6), Apple is internally testing voice dictation that does not require an Internet connection. Currently if a user wishes to use the voice-to-text function, the OS uploads their speech to cloud to convert it to text, then it is downloaded back to the phone. Since this requires an active Internet connection, it often was slow or not present at all depending on the speeds of the connection.

Future version of iOS could allow iDevices to convert the speech to text right on the device itself. Since no internet connection would be required, the conversion process would be much quicker.

Perhaps Apple would let users opt to use the offline version or have the OS determine which is the best option depending on connection speeds. Additional files are obviously required for offline dictation to occur, so those who do opt to use offline dictation would have less storage space.
