Apple iPhone 5 vs. Samsung Galaxy S 4: Display Shoot-Out

DisplayMate has posted an analysis of the displays on the Apple iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S 4, and Samsung Galaxy S III.

Samsung's new Galaxy S 4 display is a major improvement over the Galaxy S III featuring full HD 1920x1080 resolution and 441 Pixels Per Inch. It is also better calibrated, brighter, and bigger.

The iPhone 5 uses a 4.0 inch IPS LCD with a resolution of 1136x640 resulting in 326 ppi.

Dr. Raymond Soneira, President of DisplayMate Technologies, executed numerous tests to assess screen reflections, brightness and contrast, colors and intensities, viewing angles, display power consumption, and more.

Soneira concludes:

The Galaxy S4 continues the rapid and impressive improvement in OLED displays and technology. The first notable OLED Smartphone, the Google Nexus One, came in decidedly last place in our 2010 Smartphone Display Shoot-Out. In a span of just three years OLED display technology is now challenging the performance of the best LCDs. Each have their own particular strengths and weaknesses, but if you scan our color coordinated Comparison Table, both displays and technologies perform quite well and look quite good and comparable overall – we’ll see how they both evolve and improve in the next generation, which we consider next…

Saurik Jailbreaks Google Glass

Saurik, the creator of Cydia for iOS, has announced that he's jailbroken Google Glass.

#ifihadglass I would jailbreak it and modify the software (obviously). As Google actually sold me one; I did my part. http://cache.saurik.com/tinyimg/glassbroke.jpg …

Google Glass runs Android 4.0.4, which is subject to the adb restore race condition; com.google.glass.logging fits the needed configuration.

No word yet on any other plans saurik has for Google Glass but stay tuned! You may also want to check out the first unboxing videos of Google Glass.

Strange iMessage Bug Deletes Last Word of Some Messages

A strange iMessage bug that deletes the last word of some messages has been discovered by iPhone users, reports The Verge. There are two main phrases that are circulating online...

Attempting to send "I could be the next Obama" followed by a trailing space will result in Obama's name being hidden from the received message. Everything looks fine until you hit the "send" button, after which — on both screens — the final word vanishes and is replaced with blank space. ... "The best prize is a surprise" seems to be another phrase that triggers the phenomenon.

Interestingly, copying and pasting the message will reveal the missing word.

Users have been complaining about the issue for months and it seems to extend beyond these two examples. An Apple support thread from December detailed the problem but it appeared to be fixed with iOS 6.1 for some.

Apple hasn't commented on the issue yet.

Owner of Digg Acquires Instapaper

Marco Arment, creator of Instapaper, has announced that he's sold a majority stake of the company to Betaworks who also owns Digg.com.

-----
Instapaper is much bigger today than I could have predicted in 2008, and it has simply grown far beyond what one person can do. To really shine, it needs a full-time staff of at least a few people. But I wouldn’t be very good at hiring and leading a staff, and after more than five years, I’d like an opportunity to try other apps and creative projects. Instapaper needs a new home where it can be staffed and grown, but I didn’t want to give it to a big company that would probably just shut it down in six months.

A couple of months ago, at 1:30 AM, I suddenly realized who should take it over. I jumped out of bed, tiptoed downstairs (no parent wants to wake a sleeping baby), and sent an email. It didn’t take much convincing, because we both knew it was a great fit. I’m happy to announce that I’ve sold a majority stake in Instapaper to Betaworks. We’ve structured the deal with Instapaper’s health and longevity as the top priority, with incentives to keep it going well into the future. I will continue advising the project indefinitely, while Betaworks will take over its operations, expand its staff, and develop it further.

Samsung is Working on Mind-Control for Tablets

Samsung is researching ways to bring mind control to its tablets using a Galaxy Note 10.1 and a cap with EEG-monitoring electrodes, reports MIT Technology Review.

In collaboration with Roozbeh Jafari, an assistant professor of electrical engineering at the University of Texas, Dallas, Samsung researchers are testing how people can use their thoughts to launch an application, select a contact, select a song from a playlist, or power up or down a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1. While Samsung has no immediate plans to offer a brain-controlled phone, the early-stage research, which involves a cap studded with EEG-monitoring electrodes, shows how a brain-computer interface could help people with mobility issues complete tasks that would otherwise be impossible.

“Several years ago, a small keypad was the only input modality to control the phone, but nowadays the user can use voice, touch, gesture, and eye movement to control and interact with mobile devices,” said Insoo Kim, Samsung's lead researcher. “Adding more input modalities will provide us with more convenient and richer ways of interacting with mobile devices.”

iPhone 5S Production Delayed Due to Issues With Fingerprint Sensor?

Production of Apple's next generation iPhone may be delayed due to issues with integration of a new fingerprint sensor, reports Reuters.

Sources in Japan and Taiwan tell the site that they initially expected mass production to begin in June; however, that date may now have slipped further away.

The phone, widely referred to as the iPhone 5S, is expected to include new features such as a fingerprint sensor. A supply chain source in Taiwan said Apple was trying to find a coating material that did not interfere with the fingerprint sensor, and this may be causing a delay.

It's also said that Apple is developing a cheaper model of the iPhone which could appeal to low income buyers in emerging markets.

A supplier source in Japan told Reuters small-scale production of display panels will begin in May, ramping up to mass production in June. Both phones will use the same 4-inch screen, but the cheaper version will probably not include the new fingerprint technology and sport a cheaper plastic casing, the sources said.

This aligns with a recent report from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who adjusted previous estimates to suggest the iPhone 5S would ship at earliest in September.

Leaked Rear Shell for the iPad 5?

A photo allegedly depicting a rear shell for the iPad 5 has been leaked online by Tactus. The same site recently posted case photos also alleging to be from Apple's upcoming tablet which appears to have a design similar to the iPad mini.

We believe the new iPad 5 might contain the rumoured A7X chip and will retain its 9.7 inch screen size, just with much thinner bezels. So far it seems to be everything I was hoping for!
...
Apple are finally supposed to be using IGZO displays with their retina resolution screen, which means a thinner iPad is definitely on the cards. IGZO displays use up to 90% less power than previous generation iPad displays, which means a smaller battery that reduces the overall weight and thickness. So much more portable and convenient!

The post continues to speculate the iPad 5 will be 7.2mm thick, feature a 8MP rear facing camera, and storage options up to 128GB.

Apple Returns 5-8 Million iPhones to Foxconn Over Defects?

Apple has reportedly returned five to eight million defective iPhones to Foxconn, according to a China Businessreport relayed by The Register.

Details of just what went wrong are sketchy, as the source for this tale is an anonymous Foxconn staffer chatting to China Business. That report, after being forced through a couple of translation engines, suggests Apple sent back at least five million iPhones, and maybe as many as eight million, “due to appearance of substandard or dysfunctional problems.”

It's unclear which iPhone model exhibited the manufacturing defect; however, the site did say that the situation was further bad news for Foxconn; rather than being the reason for recently reported financial difficulties.
